Today, a cloudburst struck the upper part of the Khurik village in Himachal Pradesh’s Spiti Valley, triggering flash floods that damaged four houses and killed a calf. Fortunately, no people died in the incident; however, there was panic in the village, and there was significant disruption.
According to reports, a sudden and very heavy rain for 20 minutes caused a cloudburst in Khurik village, Lahaul-Spiti, and torrents of water, mud, and debris poured through the village, destroying and washing away homes and livestock. Eyewitnesses reported that it was terrifying to see frightened villagers shouting, running, and trying to alarm each other as floodwaters rushed over their village. The ground floors of four houses were inundated with heavy muck and debris.
Officials Confirm Damage, No Human Casualties
Shikha Simtia, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Kaza and Additional Deputy Commissioner, confirmed to The Tribune that no human lives were lost, although a calf was buried under the debris.
“Flash floods caused by the cloudburst filled the ground floors of four houses with muck and debris. Damage assessment is underway, and financial aid will be extended to the affected families,” she stated.
Government and BRO Respond Swiftly
Lahaul and Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana reported flash floods in both Khurik and Rangrik villages. She said that officials from all concerned departments, under the leadership of the SDM, had reached the site. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has also deployed machinery to help clear debris and reopen roads.
“The administration has been directed to immediately assess the damage and carry out relief and rescue operations,” she said, urging residents to stay calm. “The government stands firmly with the affected families during this crisis.
Leaders Call for Timely Relief and Compensation
Former MLA Ravi Thakur expressed concern over the situation and confirmed that he had spoken with the SDM, requesting immediate support for the impacted families. He urged the state government to ensure a thorough damage assessment and provide adequate compensation to the victims.
Former minister Ram Lal Markanda also called for a swift government response to deliver relief and financial assistance to those affected by the flash floods.
Relief Work in Full Swing
Local authorities and BRO teams are working around the clock to remove debris, restore connectivity, and assist residents with rebuilding efforts. Damage assessment reports are being compiled and financial assistance is expected to be released shortly.
